Acupressure

Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine bodywork technique used in a form of touch therapy that utilizes the principles of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians. Pressure may be applied by hand, by elbow, or with various devices.

In acupressure, the same points on the body are used as in acupuncture, but are stimulated with finger pressure instead of with the insertion of needles. Acupressure is used to relieve a variety of symptoms and chronic pain.

Contemporary Cupping Therapy

Cupping involves placing glass, silicone or plastic cups on the skin and creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air. The underlying tissue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup. The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins that linger in your body’s tissues.

Like acupuncture, cupping follows the lines of the meridians.

By targeting the meridian channels, cupping strives to “open” these channels – the paths through which life energy (qi) flows freely throughout the body, through all tissues and organs, thus providing a smoother and more free-flowing qi (life force). Cupping is one of the best deep-tissue therapies available. It is thought to affect tissues up to four inches deep from the external skin. Toxins can be released, as well as blockages.

You usually will feel a tight sensation in the area of the cup. Often, this sensation is relaxing and soothing. Depending on your comfort and your practitioner’s assessment of the problem, cups may be moved around or left in place. They may remain on your body briefly or for longer amounts of time. Each treatment is unique to you on that particular day. One very common area to be cupped is the back, although cups work well on other areas of restriction.

Cupping causes the skin to temporarily turn red, blue or purple, especially if there is an injury or energetic blockage under the area that was cupped. The skin discoloration can last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, but is rarely painful. Once the marks have cleared, the procedure can be repeated until the condition or ailment is resolved.

Cupping is a wonderful treatment for chronic pain and muscle ache and restriction of range of motion.

CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral therapy is a holistic healing practice that uses very light touching to balance the CranioSacral system in the body, which includes the bones, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues of the cranium (skull) and spinal area (Sacrum).

Using a soft touch generally, practitioners release restrictions in the CranioSacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

It is a gentle treatment approach that works with the natural, self correcting mechanism of the body and the CranioSacral system (the membranes and fluids that surround the brain and the spinal cord) to detect and release restrictions in mobility and enhance function.

The rhythmic movement of the CranioSacral system (CSS) can be palpated and used to determine the core issues, so that treatment can focus on the cause rather than the symptoms.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils are at the heart of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy and naturopathy are derivatives of phytotherapy. While phytotherapy uses plants, aromatherapy revolves around the fragrant substance produced by some of these plants. When extracted in liquid form, this substance becomes an essential oil. Aromatherapy has also been practiced since ancient times, but it was in the 20th century that the active effects were defined scientifically by the chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé and the doctor Jean Valnet. This discipline uses oils, diffused, massaged or taken internally (in skin care applications and for flavoring) to promote sensory pleasure. It is the deliciously olfactory art of protecting and taking care of yourself.

Our bodies can become sedated, stimulated or relaxed by the action of certain oils. Pain may be relieved, wounds may heal, inflammation and spasms may cease.
